Spring cleaning isn’t just for your home, it should be for your car too. This year, take time time to get your car Spring ready with these 10 Steps to Get Your Car Ready for Spring. There are a few simple things you can check and do to your vehicle in order to get it ready for the Spring/Summer travel. After the snow and frigid temperatures in the Winter, it is time for a refresh of some easily missed components. 

One of the things that I almost always overlook is the replacement of my cabin air filter. I usually hit everything else on the checklist (below) but easily overlook this very vital part of my car care. Cabin air filters clean the air you breathe inside your car and are super easy to replace in your car. I guess I am not the only one who forgets this step as some consumers aren’t even aware that this product exists/needs to be changed annually or every 12000 miles! Always follow recommended change intervals as noted in your vehicle owner’s manual.

How To Change Your Cabin Air Filter

We headed to our local Walmart store to grab a FRAM Fresh Breeze® cabin air filter for my SUV. Before I went to the store, though, I used this handy online tool to find the right filter for my car and ensure that my local store had it on hand.

Then, I brought it home and installed it just as the tutorial shows above. This filter is the only cabin air filter that uses the natural deodorizing qualities of ARM & HAMMER® baking soda. Contaminants that enter your vehicle with outside air can become concentrated, exposing passengers to higher levels of dust, dirt and allergens than outside the car. Always reference your car’s owner’s manual to find the exact location of you car’s Cabin Air Filter.

Open the glove compartment.

Disconnect the stop rod on the right hand side of the glove compartment by pushing it towards the front of the vehicle and unhooking it from the glove compartment.

Push in on both sides of the glove compartment until the glove box stop retainers are disengaged and allow the glove compartment to swing freely down towards the floorboard on its bottom hinge. This will allow access to the cabin filter tray.

Locate the cabin filter tray and unlock it by pressing inward on the left and right side tabs and remove by pulling the tray straight out towards you.

Remove the dirty filter from the tray. 

Put the new filter in the filter tray with the air flow arrow pointing down. (This arrow is printed on the filter.)

Put the tray with the clean filter back into the vehicle by sliding back into position. Make sure that the filter tray is completely seated and latched on both sides.

Put the glove compartment back into position by raising it in place and pushing in on both sides to re-engage the glove compartment stops and reinstall the limiting stop rod.

Close glove compartment.

Voila! You’ve successfully changed your car’s cabin air filter. Now, check out the other steps that you should spend time on to get your car ready for Spring. 

10 Steps to Get Your Car Ready for Spring

Replacing the cabin air filter in your car is only one way to get your car ready for Spring. I’ve created a handy checklist that you can use as you prepare your car for Spring. 

Car Exterior

• Wiper Blades – check and replace, if necessary.
• Tires – check tread and air pressure. Add air and replace tires, if necessary.
• Wash/Wax – give your car a good wash/wax. Spring is a great time to wax your car.

Inside The Vehicle

• Cabin Air Filter – check and change. (see tutorial above)
• Vacuum – carpets and seats.
• Dashboard – wipe down all dashboard components.

Under The Hood

• Oil – check the engine oil level and change, if necessary.
• All Fluids – check fluids like brake, power steering, transmission, windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. If any are low, contact your car care center.

Under The Vehicle

• Brakes – check the entire brake system.
• Shocks/Struts – check to ensure they’re not in need of replacement.
