12 Months to a More Organized Home | ThisNThatwithOlivia.com

At the beginning of each year, many of us try to set resolutions and goals for ourselves for how we want to change or upgrade ourselves.  But what about your home?  Would you like to give your home a little upgrading of it’s own? Upgrading your home can be done not by getting a new home, but by simply making your current home more peaceful and efficient.  I say peaceful because a cluttered, disorganized home is far from a peaceful place to be.

How can you create more peaceful space?  Well, it can be done quickly (but that often leads to relapse), or you can set up a plan to get your home organized in much of the same way that we seek to change ourselves.  Let’s give ourselves a year to get our home in order!

Here are our tips for 12 months to a more organized home and how you can get there:

Month 1 – Go through your dressers, closets and other clothing storage spaces.  Get rid of any clothing you haven’t worn in the last 6 months and anything that is ripped or worn out.

Month 2 – Go through your papers, shredding what you don’t need and filing away the rest.  Many of us actually hold on to more papers than we need.  Most monthly bills (credit cards, phone bills, etc) can be accessed online anyway.

Month 3 – Organize and purge your computer files, emails, etc.  While these don’t exactly clutter our home, it is frustrating nonetheless.  You will be surprised at how much better you will feel once this chore is complete.

Month 4 – Go through your storage spaces.  Be sure to inspect your garage, sheds, closets and more for any items in storage that you can finally get rid of.  (Do you really need that old boombox and artwork from the 80s?)

Month 5 – Time to tackle the kitchen.  Go through the cabinets in your kitchen and get rid of any dishes, cookware or small appliances that you haven’t used all year.  Use this time to deep clean your fridge and oven too!

Month 6 – Tackle the linen closet.  Do you have sheet sets that are old and worn out.  Time to get rid of them and clear up some closet space.

Month 7 – Too many toys?  Go through your kids’ toys and get rid of those that they are too old for or have simply lost interest in.

Month 8 – Time to tackle the bathrooms.  Go through your bathrooms, clearing out your medicine cabinets of any expired medicines or unused products.

Month 9 – Purge photos and momentos.  Month 9 is the perfect time to go through your boxes of photos making sure to toss the out of focus ones and organizing the rest in albums.

Month 10 – Clear out your living spaces.  Go through any drawers, shelves and hiding spaces in your living room, den and dining room making sure to toss out any unneeded items.

Month 11 –  Shine up those windows.  Grab some gloves, some cleaner and some paper towels, it’s time to clean every window in the house.  Clean, sparkling windows help make your home feel cleaner, brighter and oftentimes more spacious.

Month 12 – Organize your hobby and craft supplies. Do you have hobbies and craft supplies that are cluttering up your home?  Take this time to go through your supplies, getting rid of dried up paints and pens and throwing out any scraps that are going unused.

I need this. I tend to try and do it all in the first few weeks of the year and then get burnt out. Great list of chores to tackle all year round!
