25th Anniversary of Blue’s Clues

Nickelodeon is commemorating 25 years of its groundbreaking animated series Blue’s Clue’s. This show launched Sept. 8, 1996. This one-of-a-kind nostalgic music video titled “You Can’t Spell Blue without YOU,” features Blue’s Clues & You! star Josh Dela Cruz and former Blue’s Clues hosts, Donovan Patton and Steve Burns. Plus, they’re alongside real-life fans from various generations who grew up watching the series.

The music video was directed by Steve Burns.

In “You Can’t Spell Blue without YOU,” Blue and the Blue’s Clues hosts acknowledge the generations of fans throughout the years through song. The video features a series of images and art from past and present viewers as well as fans all grown up holding up photos of themselves as little kids.

With critical praise from educators, parents, and preschoolers, Blue’s Clues has generated an enormous global fanbase over the years in over 160 countries and more than 20 languages. Blue’s Clues drew acclaim and high ratings for its unique interactivity that helped change the way kids watch television and has remained one of the most popular preschool shows of all time.

The landmark series also raised the bar in preschool television by exploring advanced subject matter such as sign language, geography, physics, emotions, and anatomy. The show is the recipient of numerous awards including Peabody Awards, Parents Choice Awards, Television Critics Association Awards and Prix Jeunesse.

The legacy and lasting impact of the series continues with the remake of Blue’s Clues & You! in 2019, which has a new generation of preschoolers searching for clues with beloved puppy Blue and new live-action host Josh (Josh Dela Cruz).

The series features new CG-animation for Blue and Magenta, brand-new elements and refreshed iconic items from the original series including an updated Handy Dandy Notebook equipped with smartphone technology and the return of fan-favorite characters.

Blue’s Clues & You!, produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank, Calif., was recently picked up for a fourth season and nominated for two Daytime Emmy Awards.

Currently in its second season, the show airs weekdays at 11 a.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon.

Exclusive Interview with Angela Santomero and Traci Paige Johnson

To celebrate the release of Blue’s Clues & You: Story Time With Blue and the 25th Anniversary of Blue’s Clues, I was given the opportunity to sit down with Angela Santomero and Traci Paige Johnson. These two are known as the powerhouse duo of children’s programming so it was an absolute honor to chat with them.

How does it feel to be celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Blue’s Clues?

Both Angela and Traci feel overwhelmed at the massive response from the 25th anniversary video!

Angela – You can see it and say what you want the reaction to be but just to see it. You know we’ve worked really hard to get to this point. It sure doesn’t stop being overwhelming and beautiful.

Traci – Its all the feelings all at once! We still cannot watch the video without tearing up! Even though we know it word for word, it just always pulls at your heartstrings! We just feel so privileged and honored to be a part of kid’s lives in that way- even young adults lives now. The fact that we are making such an impact feels good and it feels like we are making a difference.

How has Blue’s Clues changed over the last 25 years with the new digital age we are in?

Angela – We want to be everywhere kids are, they can take Blue’s Clues on the road with them. We’ve always been built to be interactive so Noggin did interactive episodes where kids can literally draw and select their own clues and do all of that on the iPad. So, just taking the technology to the next level for the experience of Blue’s Clues is lovely and then of course we needed to point to it on the show.

Do you have a favorite episode or moment over the years?

Traci – The first episode of each host is definitely one that is a favorite. You see them bring their own talent and creativity to the screen and the world.

Angela – Just the evolution of the series and seeing things change over time from the very first episode. Then, when we really planned and did a trilogy when Steve was leaving to go to college, with Donovan is just so much fun! Then when Josh came in, it just took us to another level. He’s the whole package- talented, emotional and inviting. So, that first episode that Josh did was very impactful too.

Traci – You’d think after 25 years, the stories would get stale, but no, they’re just expanding and the adventures are opening up! Its fun in the reboot to introduce the older characters back like Periwinkle and knowing that we are introducing an old friend to a new audience.

Angela – I think leading in for Josh, meeting his Lola and celebrating his culture, all of these episodes hit you in the heart. They’re so beautiful. So, yes there’s a lot of favorites.

What character do you feel you relate to the most?

Traci – Blue, obviously. This is a tough one, its like asking your favorite kid because you do truly love them all.

Angela – I think Blue & Magenta as best friends, we totally love when they’re together, its the best. Rainbow puppy is our new character that is like Miss Broadway so that just cracks us up. Mr. Salt has been like a favorite from the beginning. He’s like one of the real adults in the house.

Traci – Mr. Salt is like the OG, the original gangster! We’re excited that Periwinkle is coming back in an episode I think this month! Oh I want to do a shout out to Snail. He’s very introverted and quiet but she’s there 3 times every episode and makes a special appearance in the movie, too!
