Exclusive Interview with Paul-Mike’l Williams “Darius” and Raini Rodriguez “Sammy”
I had the wonderful opportunity to chat with young talent Paul-Mike’l Williams and Raini Rodriguez about their roles in Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous. I’ve participated in a lot of round table interviews like this one, but I have to say that I enjoyed this one SO much! Both Paul-Mike’l and Raini exhibited such energy on the video chat and were SO excited about Season 3!
About Paul-Mike’l Williams – “Darius” in Camp Cretaceous
Paul-Mikél Williams voices Dinosaur expert and group leader, Darius on Netflix original series, “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous” from DreamWorks Animation, inspired by the multi-billion-dollar “Jurassic World” franchise from Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment.
Williams currently also plays a recurring role on the hit HBO series “Westworld.” He starred in the feature film “The 15:17 to Paris” (2018), directed by Clint Eastwood as the young version of American hero Anthony Sadler. Hois credits also include the feature film Streetlights directed by Patricia Santana in which he played the tenderhearted and imaginative runaway, Joel.
Additionally, Williams also features in Disney channel’s “Sydney to the Max” and the DreamWorks Animation series “Spirit Riding Free.” He has also voices characters in various video games including, “Eleven Eleven” (NBC Universal-2019) and “LoL: Legends of Runeterra” (Riot Games 2020). About Raini Rodriguez – “Sammy” in Camp Cretaceous
Raini Rodirguez voices the gregarious and enthusiastic Sammy Gutierrez in DreamWorks Animation’s highly-anticipated Netflix original series, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, inspired by the multi-billion-dollar Jurassic World franchise from Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment.
Raini made her film debut in “Paul Blart: Mall Cop”, where she starred as Kevin James’ daughter, then 7 years later reprised the same character once again in the sequel, “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2.” She played “Trish De La Rosa” in the hit Disney show “Austin and Ally” for which she also directed an episode. Some of her other television credits include Disney’s “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody,” Disney XD’s “I’m in the Band,” Nickelodeon’s “True Jackson”, Showtime’s “Huff,” and ABC’s “Family of the Year.”
Shooting the feature film “PROM” came at a perfect time in Raini’s life since she was homeschooled and didn’t have a Prom of her own. After starring in the independent film “Girl in Progress” with Eva Mendes, Raini got to share her vocal gifts by singing the theme song “Living Your Dreams” from the movie “Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3: Viva La Fiesta!”
Recently, she has had the opportunity to combine her love of singing and acting in Nickelodeon’s “Mutt & Stuff” and in voiceover roles on Disney Channel’s animated series “Vampirina” and “The Lion Guard”. Raini also acted in the theatrical production of legendary Neil Simon’s screenplay “The Goodbye Girl”, and has a recurring role on Disney Channel’s “Bunk’d”.
Most recently, Raini completed filming for the upcoming film, “Rekindling Christmas”.
A native of Texas, Raini Rodriguez moved to Los Angeles in 2005 to pursue her dream of acting and singing.
Virtual Roundtable
Raini and Paul-Mike’l are so fun!! I was able to chat with them about their roles in the show and am excited to share this with you:
What is the main message that you’d like the viewers to get out of Season 3?
Paul-Mike’l: I think the main message that we are looking forward to giving out this season is “perseverance, friendship and teamwork” because thats one thing thats been slowy building through the seasons. In season 1, we didn’t see too much of it, in season 2 it started to build some but now in Season 3 the focus is more on friendship rather than survival. The main theme of this season is to find time to have fun. You see that a lot with character pairings in this season. Its that build that really connects these people.
Raini: I agree with Paul-Mike’l. This season especially is about teamwork. These 6 kids working together to get themselves off the island. There are a lot of new threats introduced and I think that for them it makes it even more a dire situation for survival. There are so many things working against them, they feel that the only thing working for them is themselves and each other and they use that to their advantage this season. What I really hope that people get from this is “in the moments of the bad, there are the moments of the good. If you always look for the good, there will be good.
What is your favorite thing about your characters?
Raini: I love how family oriented Sammy is. That is what motivates her a lot to do things. She’s all about her family back home and her new found camp family. I really, really love how much she wants others to do well. Like when a crazy idea comes up, and there are many of those in this season, Sammy will react and support no matter if anyone else does. She’s all about uplifting others. She gives very polite constructive criticism but 90% of the time she is all for all of the crazy ideas as long as it makes you feel good.
Paul-Mike’l: I have to agree with Raini. Darius and Sammy are like on the same level with that. Darius is always optimistic and always trying to cheer people up. I have to say my favorite thing about Darius as a whole is his courageousness and his commitment. We all need those leadership skills at some point in our life. He’s courageous even though he knows the odds are against him – that’s something that I’ve always wanted in my life too. To be able to portray that in here, I am extremely grateful for it. I also love his willingness to help other people especially in Season 3. All of the characters learn in season 3 how to rely on each other.
