About Clifford: The Big Red Dog
When middle-schooler Emily Elizabeth (Darby Camp) meets a magical animal rescuer (John Cleese) who gifts her a little, red puppy, she never anticipated waking up to find a giant ten-foot hound in her small New York City apartment. While her single mom (Sienna Guillory) is away for business, Emily and her fun but impulsive uncle Casey (Jack Whitehall) set out on an adventure that will keep you on the edge-of-your-seat as our heroes take a bite out of the Big Apple. Based on the beloved Scholastic book character, Clifford will teach the world how to love big!
Interview with Darby Camp “Emily Elizabeth” and Jack Whitehall “Uncle Casey”
I was able to sit down on Zoom with Darby Camp and Jack Whitehall to chat about their roles in Clifford: The Big Red Dog. Darby plays the role of “Emily Elizabeth” and Jack plays the role of “Uncle Casey”. The interview was fun to say the least, and I fell in love with Clifford even more!
What do you hope viewers get out of watching the movie? What message do you hope they gather?
Darby – “I hope that kids and really anyone of all ages take away how important it is to love one another and love others for their differences. Also to accept yourself, know your worth and also one of my favorite things about the film is that I hope that people see that those that are unique are the ones that change the world. I hope that everyone can learn from that and realize how important it is to be different and how that it’s okay.”
Jack – “What I would like for this movie to provide to the hard-working mothers of America, is the gift that this movie can hopefully give to you is that you can take away an hour and a half of peace and quiet. I’ve witnessed this movie being played in cinemas with children that were literally feral before the screening started. They were running around, screaming at the tops of their voices, throwing popcorn and the like. Then the movie started and the kids were totally captivated by this big red dog for an hour and a half. Hopefully that is the gift that Clifford can give Moms this Holiday Season!”
What is your favorite scene in the film?
Darby – “My favorite scene is the car chase. I like the car chase when I’m riding Clifford, but the car chase where I’m driving Casey’s moving truck. That was super fun! I didn’t actually get to drive but I love that behind the scenes it was super fun to film because me and Isaac had a lot of fun, we improvised a little bit. It was super fun to see people walking by on the streets reacting to, I was 12 at the time, a 12 year old sitting in the driver’s seat of a moving van. That was definitely my favorite scene.
Jack – “I really like the scene where I’m trying to keep Clifford quiet and he’s going crazy wagging his tail and I’m jumping on his tail to try to stop him and he flings be across the room. It was a big stunt, it was really fun to film. Yea, I went full Tom Cruise, I was strapped into a harness, there was wires and it felt like I was suddenly in a Mission Impossible film.”
