DIY Yarn Hat Ornaments! #DIY

Thank You For Sharing!!

Every year around the Christmas season,  my family does an ornament exchange. It is a great way to get some new ornaments on our trees and also to share some favorites with our family. We try to make sure we give everyone a unique ornament. This year, I wanted to make them instead of going to a store and buying them – they’ll be one of a kind. I am excited to share this fun DIY craft for some Yarn Hat Ornaments that you can make with just a few supplies.

Materials:

  • Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Empty Paper Towel or Toilet Paper Roll
  • Hardcover Book (my book measures 7-1/2″)
  • 18″ ruler or tape measure
  • Yarn used:
    • Deborah Norville Collection Serenity Chunky Tweeds in Bordeaux (red) color
    • Red Heart yarn in green tones color

 Directions:

Using scissors, Cut a paper tube about 1″ in length.
— If using a chunky yarn (red shown): Wrap your yarn around a book 30 times. If you don’t use a book, cut 30 pieces of yarn, 15″ in length.

— If using a thin yarn (green shown): Wrap yarn around the book 65 times or cut 65 pieces of 15″ yarn.

Once your yarn is cut, set aside one strand for tying the hat.

Begin to wrap the yarn around the paper tube. You’ll fold the yarn in half, and place a simple slip knot around the tube.

YarnHat3

Pull the knot snug and slide the two separated pieces together. Repeat until you’ve completely covered the paper tube.

YarnHat4

Separate the strands of yarn in half.

Tuck one strand into the tube and the other. Pull gently to hide the knots under the tube and straighten the yarn.

Using the one yarn strand you set aside, tie it firmly around the bunch of the yarn, and double knot it.

Keep that “tail” long and away from the others so you can use it to hang your hat. If you cut it off, that’s okay, you can add it later.

Gather the yarn and trim it to make a cute pom pom.

Tie the tail at the top and hang!

You can make larger hats: cut card board (use a cereal box) and staple the circle together, then cover the staples with masking tape so the yarn does not snag on them. You can also fill the hat with tissue paper or a plastic bag to keep it standing up.

What do you think? Will you be making these for gifts this year? They would make adorable gift tie on ornaments – I love to do that. I’m going to make some more for my family. I think they’re adorable, easy and fun!
