Interview with Tara Strong “Kitty Fairy” and “Mama Box”
Tara Strong sat down with me for an interview about her role as “Kitty Fairy” and “Mama Box” in Gabby’s Dollhouse. You may know Tara Strong from some of her other roles, like I did, too! She was an absolute joy to talk to and of course an extremely talented voice actor.
What is the biggest challenge in being a voice actor?
You know, I’m so lucky! If I really had to say like ‘gosh, what’s authentically challenging?’ it would be like I almost feel bad calling it challenging compared to what other people do during the day. It’s a pretty incredible job, it really is. I’d say like within those parameters like saying I know how lucky I am, things that could be more challenging are like a video game like you’re doing 1,000 death sounds and that can really wipe out your voice. Sometimes learning music that is new, maybe they gave it that day and you have to fit it into the right pocket and make sure it’s all right. And dubbing in foreign languages because you have to match the lips and put it in a different language and do good acting. Those are the top three things that I guess are ‘challenging’.

How do you feel you relate to Kitty Fairy?
I relate to Kitty Fairy in a pretty big way. First of all, I LOVE LOVE LOVE outside – gardens, green, trees, grass, flowers, weeds – I just love outdoor and nature in a really big and profound way. I also love magic and singing and ritual around magic where you’re creating positive experience and light and making people happy. It’s going to sound cheesy but I love it very much, we are very alike!

What message do you hope viewers get from watching Gabby’s Dollhouse?
Well, I hope for kids they get the messages of friendship and inclusion and not judging other people’s personalities or gifts and recognizing that everyone makes mistakes and thats okay. Those sort of core principles that are easily in every episode. But then on top of that, I’d love for them to tap into what makes this show extra special which is imagination and magic and ritual and doing things together and being creative around it. I think there’s something very special about the garden, the magic, the arts and crafts and the thing they do to come together and create this very magical world. I hope it inspires kids to create and live in their own little magical world.

How do you feel you relate to Mama Box?
I relate to Mama Box because I also love being a Mama and also a very arts and crafty mama. My kids and I have been doing arts and crafts together since they were tiny, tiny. We did origami, sculpting and clay and anything we could find. We were ALWAYS doing arts and crafts and being really creative. They still do it today. My son just made this HUGE shape out of origami. Its the most amazing geometrical phenomenon I’ve ever seen! So, we’re still pretty crafty and loving!

Do you have a favorite episode of Gabby’s Dollhouse so far?
I think I’d have to rewatch it to really give an accurate answer. They all, when you’re working on them, so good. The animation is so good, it’s like the cutest top to bottom animation I’ve ever seen. I think I couldn’t say what my favorite is without rewatching them all. That’s a super honest answer, otherwise I will lie ;).

Out of all of the characters in Gabby’s Dollhouse, is there one that you’d like to voice outside of the ones you voice for?
No, because it is the most perfectly voice cast show that I’ve ever experienced. There is something magical and serendipitous about each human who voices each part. I wouldn’t want to mess with its magic if that makes sense.
