If you are serious about blogging as a career, you likely want an answer to the question of how do bloggers make money. There are a multitude of ways for bloggers to make money, but we will cover in detail a few of the most popular ways that we use on a regular basis to earn income on our site.
How Do Bloggers Make Money?
On site display ad units. You probably notice I have ads at the top of the blog, on our sidebar and within the body of this blog post. These ads are what they call pay per click or pay per page view ads. The most popular ad networks will offer you two different types of ads. You can have text only ads or image ads. They will also offer you a choice of ads that pay per click on the ad, as well as ads that pay per page view you site has. Both are a great way to earn easy residual income.
Popular display ad networks: Google Adsense, Media.net, Advertising.net, Amazon, Glam and BlogHer.
Some ad networks don’t display ads on mobile sites easily. You’ll want to consider separate networks to make sure you are making the most of your mobile and tablet traffic.
Popular mobile display ad networks: Google Adsense, Padsquad, TBN Flight
There are many other display ad networks, but these are some of the most popular and commonly used by bloggers and a great place to start.
Place pay per click ads inside your blog posts, and pay per page view ads in side bars as well as headers or footers on your site for optimum exposure and earnings.
Affiliate marketing. The term affiliate marketing comes with a bad reputation in some situations, but on a blog the appropriate affiliate marketing can be a great financial gain that doesn’t make your site feel like a sales pitch. Affiliate marketing is when you use links to websites for promoting products and brands you believe in, use or feel are a good fit for your audience. This can be as simple as linking to Amazon for a mixer you use to make your favorite cookies. These links should be disclosed with a simple message letting your readers know they are affiliate links that you may be paid for if your reader makes a purchase through it.
Popular affiliate marketing networks: Amazon Associates, Commission Junction, Skimlinks, Vigilinks, Linkshare, and Share A Sale.
Weaving these links naturally into your blog posts is a highly effective way to earn money by sharing things you would recommend anyway. Some networks also have affiliate ad units you can place in your sidebar just like you would a display ad.
Sponsored posts and ads. Sponsored ads are when a company or client pays you to write a blog post about their brand, product or message. As a blogger of integrity, you should choose to only write things you can feel honest and truthful about. These blog posts will require you to state that they are sponsored, and will typically include images, links and information about the product, brand or message. There are companies that contact you directly, as well as several blogger programs you can join to apply for these types of posts.
Popular blogger networks for sponsored posts: Influence Central, Best Buy Bloggers Network, Social Fabric/Collective Bias, Mom It Forward, Tap Influence, Collectively and Izea
Sell your own products. Whether is is an eBook you have created of information, menu plans or printable household helps, or a product you sell through an outside company your blog is a great way to earn more money. You can easily advertise sales of eBooks, products you have on an Etsy store or even products you are selling through a direct marketing program on sidebars or within blog posts on your site.
These are just some of the ways that bloggers can make money. When you ask, “how do bloggers make money?” this is the beginning of what you will need to learn. Once you have these methods down, you can consider other things like public speaking, writing a book or doing tutorial videos.
