Holiday Butter Mints bring back all of the memories of childhood. My grandmother always had these along with some other classic Christmas candy when we’d go visit. With a few simple ingredients, you’ve got a nostalgic Christmas treat!
As I’ve gotten older, the one thing that I’ve enjoyed doing is trying to remember and recreate some of the classic family recipes. Growing up far from grandparents made me cherish the moments we did have in my Mom-Mom’s apartment or my Granny’s house down south. There were classic flavors that I learned to expect – country ham and homemade biscuits down south and chipped beef gravy up north.
I was at least a few hours from my grandparents growing up, so we clung onto local friends of my parents. There was one particular lady, Helen, and she ALWAYS had a Rum Cake for us when we would visit.
Christmas time is another time that I remember classic family recipes. Butter mints are one thing that both of my grandparent’s houses had at all times. My Granny made some delicious Christmas taffy too and while I have been searching for that recipe to attempt to recreate, I remember the classic Tupperware container on top of her refrigerator. Oh the memories.
What are Butter Mints?
Did you know that Butter Mints, a nostalgic treat used to be very popular and date all the way back to 1893! Butter Mints are made with simple ingredients including butter, powdered sugar and some flavoring like mint extract! The recipe I am sharing adds some coloring to make them festive, but it is totally optional.
Not only do they take a simple ingredients, but they are super easy to make. After mixing the ingredients, place them in the fridge and let them harden! They will surely still keep their smooth center, but when you let them dry a bit it helps prevent them from sticking together!
If you’ve never tried these old fashioned mints, you’re missing out.

How Do I Make Old Fashioned Butter Mints?
Line a cutting board or sheet pan with parchment paper – be sure it fits in the fridge. Sprinkle with a light dusting of powdered sugar. Set aside.
In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the cream cheese, butter and mint extract. Cream together.
Add in one cup of powdered sugar and mix on low speed to combine.
Continue to add one cup at a time and mix well between each addition. Scrape down the sides and mix until smooth and all the powdered sugar is incorporated.
Divide the mixture equally between three bowls. Tint one bowl green and one bowl red.
Cover the bowls with plastic wrap and chill for about an hour or until firm.
Once firm, scoop out a heaping teaspoon’s worth and roll into a ball. Place on the parchment lined pan.
If the mixture is too sticky, use a sprinkling of powdered sugar to dust your hands to roll easier.
Once all the mints have been shaped, use a fork to press the balls into a disc. Use a dusting of powdered sugar to prevent the fork from sticking.
Place the sheet pan back in the fridge and allow to harden for an additional 2-4 hours.
