Operation Christmas Child is a great way to give back during the holiday season. The yearly campaign has been run by Samaritan’s Purse since 1993. Packing a shoebox helps the organization spread joy and cheer to children affected by poverty, war, and other tragic conditions.
For one week in November, Operation Christmas Child collects shoeboxes to send to children in third-world countries. You can drop off your shoeboxes at many collection points, such as a church or restaurant in your area.
When filling your shoebox, you should keep a gender and age range in mind when buying the gifts. Decide if you want to shop for a boy or girl (or do one of each!), and then consider these age ranges:
- 2-4 years old
- 5-9 years old
- 10-14 years old
Once you have filled your box, you will attach a label that has the gender and ages you have selected. This ensures the box reaches an appropriate child.

Notes about Packing your Shoebox

- Starting in 2017, toothpaste will not be allowed. However, you can still include a toothbrush.
- Items included must be brand new.
- Starting in 2017, no candy will be allowed in the shoebox.
- Include extra batteries for any toys that need them, so the child can enjoy it longer.
- In your personal note, include your mailing address if you would like the child to contact you. It’s not guaranteed, but some receive letters or photos from the families that receive shoeboxes.
- Get your own children involved! Choose the gender and age range your kids fit into so they can easily help you shop and pack the shoebox.
