Have you ever seen a Cirque Du Soleil show? We went to our first one a few years ago and loved it. Just yesterday we went to our 3rd show and fell in love with it all over again. The show that we saw was titled OVO and was at the EagleBank arena. Wow, what a fantastic show that kept us engaged for the entire show. The audience was attentive and there was a lot of interaction provided by the cast.
About Cirque Du Soleil
It all started in Baie-Saint-Paul, a small town near Québec City in Canada. There, in the early eighties, a band of colourful characters roamed the streets, striding on stilts, juggling, dancing, breathing fire, and playing music. They were Les Échassiers de Baie-Saint-Paul (the Baie-Saint-Paul Stiltwalkers), a street theatre group founded by Gilles Ste-Croix. Already, the townsfolk were impressed and intrigued by the young performers – including Guy Laliberté who founded Cirque du Soleil.
From a group of 20 street performers at its beginnings in 1984, Cirque du Soleil is a major Québec-based organization providing high-quality artistic entertainment. The company has close to 4,000 employees, including 1,300 artists from more than 50 different countries.
Cirque du Soleil has brought wonder and delight to more than 180 million spectators in more than 400 cities in over sixty countries on six continents.
About OVO
OVO is a headlong rush into a colourful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. The insects’ home is a world of biodiversity and beauty filled with noisy action and moments of quiet emotion.
When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives.
It’s love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye – and the feeling is mutual.
OVO is overflowing with contrasts. The hidden, secret world at our feet is revealed as tender and torrid, noisy and quiet, peaceful and chaotic. And as the sun rises on a bright new day the vibrant cycle of insect life begins anew.
Our Experience
What a show! We arrived and were immediately directed to our seats and ready for the show to begin. Before the show began, some of the actors were out in the audience engaging everyone and getting them ready. One of my all time favorite things was that it seemed that there was no bad seat in the house. They didn’t use the entire arena, but instead utilized a large part of it to allow everyone to have a good seat.
When the show began, the graphics and acts were phenomenal. I couldn’t take pictures fast enough to catch all of the acts but I definitely caught some great ones. The show wasn’t too long before an intermission but the second half seemed much shorter. The entire show, intermission included, was about 90 minutes long. While it is hard to pick a favorite act, I want to lean towards the trampoline acts at the end of the show.
Wow, they did some awesome tricks. A few times, throughout the show, you could hear the audience gasp as someone contorted their body in a way that we never felt was possible. Those acting are fantastic, too!
Overall, we had a great time at the opening show of OVO and I highly recommend taking a few hours for a date night or family night to see this show while on tour in Fairfax, VA.
