I was invited by Disney to attend the #QueenOfKatwe Event. Although all of my expenses were paid, all opinions are my own.
Disney’s Queen Of Katwe is in select theaters now and will be everywhere on September 30th. I had the exclusive opportunity to attend the Queen Of Katwe Premiere and see the movie two times while I was in Los Angeles. This film is absolutely inspiring and amazing and I encourage you to take your entire family to see it. Queen Of Katwe follows the journey of Phiona Mutesi, a young girl from Uganda who sells corn on the streets to try to help her family. They’re not in a good financial state but their Mom, Harriet, makes the best of it and does what she knows is best for their family. Phiona then comes upon a chess club where Robert Katende is teaching his “Pioneers” how to play chess. Phiona joins in and becomes a chess champion! There are many different obstacles along the way but chess really taught her some valuable life lessons.
Queen Of Katwe is a film that is great for the entire family. The lessons taught in this film are amazing and truly hit home for everyone. There was also not a dry eye in the theater – an amazing film. What I think that I love most about this movie is that it is not only based on a true story, but that it is filmed right in Uganda and that there are people in the film that are from Uganda. Some of the actors are in Queen Of Katwe and have never acted before. The makers of this movie surely did a fantastic job.
Make it a point to take your family to see this amazing film. I promise you won’t be disappointed. Stay tuned for more about my experience in LA including interviews with the real life Phiona Mutesi and Robert Katende as well as those who portrayed them in the film. Plus, we got to chat with the director, Mira Nair! All of that will be posted right here soon!
