I was invited by Focus Features to attend this event. All of my expenses were paid, but I promise all opinions are my own.
A few weeks ago I was in Los Angeles attending the Ratchet and Clank Press Conference. While there, I had the awesome opportunity to conduct some cast interviews with the talent and director of this new movie. We were able to interview Kevin Munroe – Director of Ratchet & Clank, Bella Thorne – voice of Cora and James Arnold Taylor – Voice of Ratchet.
We started out with the opportunity to interview Kevin Munroe since both of the voice talents were running a little late. It was such an awesome time with him because we got to hear that Ratchet & Clank was “all about finding a good story.” Kevin stated that gamers can be a tough bunch to please when a movie is based of such an awesome game. However, he told us that the fan base has been super supportive of them on this journey!
Kevin stated that he wanted to stay true to the game that Insomniac Games created – which is fantastic! Ratchet & Clank is a game that was made for children and so the movie is as well. He said that staying true to this being family-friendly was one of his goals. He wanted to make it a movie that children and parents could enjoy watching and said that they could’ve made this into a PG-13 movie but there was no need for that.
James Arnold Taylor and Bella Thorne joined Kevin Munroe in the room. When they came in, it was so fun. James had his GoPro camera going and they were both very warm and excited to be there. I love that James Arnold Taylor even made his own YouTube video documenting the press day- check it out:
How fun was that? Did you see me and my blogger friends?? 😀
So, James and Bella graced us with their presence and we started to chat about some fun things about the movie and their parts in Ratchet & Clank.
We kicked off the chat with James Arnold Taylor and Bella Thorne by asking James if there was a difference in his approach between voicing or recording for video games and recording for films.
James said that he has been very blessed to have done quite a bit of both and that all of them are different from each other. Videogames you are isolated, you’re recording in your little room. There is just a director feeding you lines. In the film we all got to work together.
Kevin shared that it was different to direct a videogame versus a film. He said that somethings you think that because it’s live action, it has to be this way or that way. However, directing a live action film is not really much different than directing animation. It all comes down to the lighting, and so its just about the story and the characters and finding something fun you want to say.
We asked Bella and James what the funnest part of doing these voices was for them. Bella said that she enjoyed the snacks and James thinks that Bella had better snacks than he did ;). Bella said that the funnest part was playing a bad girl. She got to stretch her personality to the limits because it is so different of a character for her. James commended Bella on her job as Cora in the movie and said that he is afraid of her character in every way. James said that “I’ve been Fred Flinstone, and no one expects Fred to come out of me, or Obi-Wan Kenobi, etc.
James and Bella then shared how each of them identified with their characters. Bella said, “In almost every aspect. She’s not afraid to boss Ratchet around. At the end of the day she might like shoot first and then ask questions later which isn’t the best thing but in her case it works. At the end of the day she just wants what is best for the team. James said that he walked into a character that was the underdog but wanted to do the right thing, he wants to save the day and he wants to have everybody like him. That’s kind of the way Jame is, that’s why he is a voice actor.
Our interview time with Kevin Munroe, James Arnold Taylor and Bella Thorne was an absolute blast. All of them were so passionate about Ratchet & Clank and really worked well together. I am looking forward to sharing my review of the movie soon! For now, the video game is available for PS4.
