When cooler weather hits, I am always on the look for some indoor activities for my son. Sensory bins are always a hit in our house and I love that I can make them themed with some simple products I have at home. With Liam’s sensory aversions, these are certainly great therapy for him right at home. This St. Patrick’s Day Sensory Bin can be made this year and put up for next year! It also requires a few extra materials that can be purchased for cheap!
St. Patrick’s Day Sensory Bin
Ingredients
3 3/4 cups white rice
Light green and bright green food coloring
White vinegar
2 small ziplock sandwich bags
Paper plates or baking pan
Sensory bin items
Pom-Pom balls
Jingle bells
Gold coins
Gold stars
Directions
1. Add a 1/2 tablespoon of vinegar about 15 drops regular food coloring or 5 drops gel food coloring to each bag
2. Add 1 1/4 cup of white rice to each bag
3. Zip each bag close and shake until all rice is colored green
4. Pour each bag onto a paper plate to dry for about 2-3 hours OR pour and spread onto a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes in a 300 degree oven for a faster dry time
5. Gather your green, yellow, and orange pom-pom balls, gold coins, gold bells, etc. and place them in a small Tupperware container.
6. Pour your dry green and remaining white rice onto your sensory bin items
*supervise while kids play as this bin does contain small items
This is perfect — what a great way to celebrate with your kiddos this St. Patrick’s Day in a great sensory based play. This bin may take a little time to make while you wait for the colored rice to dry, but I promise it is well worth the wait!
