Tips for Decluttering for the First Time

A home that is littered in clutter can be really embarrassing and stressful. We all have clutter, but some of us more than others. Your home is something that you have worked hard to have, so take pride in that, and make it one that you can show off to others. If you are ready to part with some of your clutter, here are some ways to help you get started, as a first timer.

One Room at a Time

While you likely cannot wait to get your entire home in order, it is easiest to start in one room, and then slowly move onto others, once completed. If you jump from room to room, it can be very discouraging, when it seems like you are not accomplishing much. Also, jumping from room to room, sometimes means that you are just moving things from one room. You need to find a permanent home for your clutter, not a temporary home in another room.

Use Baskets to Sort Your Items

Once you have decided which room to start in, grab three baskets. Label them Keep, Toss, and Donate. Do not add a fourth basket for the potential maybes. It is either clutter or it’s not, there is no in between during this decluttering exercise.

Determine Whether it is Clutter or Not

Have you used or worn in it the last six months? If not, send it to your Toss or Donate baskets. Does the item hold any sentimental value? If so, find the proper place for it in your home. If you have favorite pictures just lying around, invest in some frames or photo books to display them.

Don’t Get Sentimental with Your Belongings

Most people struggle to declutter because they are attached to their items. One thing about decluttering is you have to get over the attachment you have to your stuff. Once you can get over the sentimental value of your belongings, it will be much easier to declutter. It’s okay to keep a few items to remember significant events in your life, but these items shouldn’t take up your whole basement or attic.

When you look at everything in your home that you need to declutter, you may have a lot of emotions. Use the tips to declutter and make your home look fabulous again. Clutter not only messes with our homes, but with our emotions too. Start the journey to decluttering and watch your life get better by the second.
